z5979245xThough accompanied by only slightly sub-zero temperatures, gusty winds with heavy snowfall have hit cities and rural areas.

The situation on Polish roads has become difficult and hazardous for drivers due to continuous snowfall in many regions since Friday. Road maintenance teams are struggling with snowdrifts and working hard round the clock to clear major routs. Winter has taken its toll over the weekend in close to 4 hundred accidents in which 36 people have been killed. These include not only drivers and passengers of vehicles, but also many pedestrians.

Accumulating wet snow has brought down power lines in the southern Swietokrzyskie province, leaving over 3 thousand households without electricity, while gusty winds in Western Pomerania, in the coastal north-west, damaged or caused failures of 250 transformer stations.
