Sightseeing in Szczecin

There are many places worth seeing in Szczecin. We will describe just a few of them. We hope you find something useful in this part of our guide.

(Picture) The Old City Hall - gothic from the first half of XV century, rebuilt in the baroque style in XVII century. Reconstructed in 1975. Inside there is a museum presenting the history of Stettin from the early Middle Ages to contemporary times.

The Pomeranian Dukes' Castle - one of the main centres of cultural life in the Western Pomerania. Rebuilt after war destructions it became the seat of administrative and cultural institutions, among others the institution named The Pomeranian Dukes' Castle, which aim is to support and popularise artistic activity in Szczecin and the province.

St. Peter's and St. Paul's Church - the wooden Polish-Catholic church built in 1124. The present Gothic building comes from the first half of XV century.

The National Museum - the building was erected in the years 1726-1727 as the Palace of States Parliament. Rebuilt in XIX and XX centuries.

The Maidens' Gate - is a part of the Medieval city walls that surrounded the city until the first half of the XVIII C. It used to be a prison and part of the defense system.

The Municipal Museum (today the Maritime Museum) - A Wilhelm Meyer-Schwartau design decorated in early Modernist and Secession style. The fasades contain images of the pyramid of Cheops, the Acropolis, Koln and Bologna Cathedral and St. Peter's Basilica. On the south wall there is a relief of women, symbolizing the art of painting, graphics and sculpture. Today it is the Maritime Museum and a Contemporary Theatre. Museum open TUE-SUN 10.00-16.00, adult 6 zł, reduced 3 zł.

The Royal Gate - The project of Gerhard Cornelius von Wallrave. Was built between 1725-28. Over the entrance you will see a crest with the Prussian Eagle encircled by the chains of the Black Eagle and royal crown. The Gate ornamentation are reliefs of arms and military banners as was the Roman tradition of placing the arms and banners of defeated armies over city gates.
